Theodorescu has identified several genes associated with metastasis and COXEN a radical new strategy aimed at personalizing cancer therapy and identifying which new drugs for cancer patients. Most recently his work has resulted in a new biomarker that can predict node positive disease at cystectomy from a transurethral sample of tumor. This is currently being established in clinical labs. Dr. Theodorescu is an active surgeon who has also made numerous contributions to the clinical practice of urology including prostate brachytherapy and the development of a new modification of the orthotopic bladder replacement and publication of the first series on robotic (daVinci) cystectomy.

He has served as co-editor in chief for the World Journal of Urology and on the editorial boards of several publications. He is on the board of directors of the metastasis research society (MRS) and a permanent member of the National Institutes of Health Tumor Progression Metastasis (TPM) study section.
